Dartmoor research

http://www.dartmoorwalks.org.uk/resource/menhirs.php

The fierce black hounds roam freely on the moor. They are savage and evil, and known as the Hounds of Hell or the Whist Hounds. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is said to have been inspired by the legend of the evil Squire Richard Cabell.
The squire is said to have sold his soul to the Devil. After he died on July 5, 1677, a phantom pack of black hunting dogs with glowing red eyes is said to have raced across Dartmoor on the night of his burial, breathing fire and howling at his tomb. According to local legend, the demonic hounds have roamed the moor ever since and can often be seen around the anniversary of his death prowling around the grave trying to get the promised soul for the Devil.

Clapper bridges are unique to the Dartmoor area. There are 30 or so bridges on Dartmoor constructed in the 13 th and 14 th centuries by medieval tin workers and farmers as crossings over the many small rivers that traverse the moorland. The best example is at Postbridge, four enormous 8 ton slabs, each 15 feet long, span the East Dart River.

Task 3: design an ordinary object in the style of a chosen artist

Cubism
I took influence from the art movement cubism and the artist Robert Delaunay to make a kettle.

Robert Delaunay, Joie de vivre (The Joy of Life)

To create my ordinary object in the style of another artist, I started by searching for artists and I found Robert Delaunay. I took influence from his 'Joie de vivre' piece as I felt it would work well at transferred into in ordinary piece. I found an image of a kettle as everybody uses a kettle most of the time. I chose Robert Delaunay because his bright colours and shapes within each other which looks very mad and to create this as  an object would be interesting to do.

Next task was to take an ordinary object and turn it into a character that can be used in a game. I started by researching game characters to help me create a character for a game.

Mario is a fictional character in the Mario video game franchise by Nintendo, created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario has appeared in over 200 video games since his creation.
Mario currently appears in varied video game genres such as racing, puzzle, party, role-playing, fighting and sports.

Mario is depicted as a short, pudgy, Italian plumber who resides in the Mushroom Kingdom. He repeatedly rescues Princess Peach from the turtle-like villain Bowser and stops his numerous plans to destroy him and take over the kingdom.
Mario also has other enemies and rivals, including Donkey Kong and Wario.
Mario Kart racing series, Mario Tennis and Mario Golf series, role-playing video games such as Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG, and educational games, such as Mario Is Missing! and Mario's Time Machine.

I then decided to use the kettle that I used in my cubism piece. I took it into Photoshop and created the image above. I attempt to think of a game involving a kettle but I found it challenging.

I then created a character using a hair dryer and came up with a game concept.

The game is about defeating head lice. You play as a hair dryer who has to use its air powers to fly up and push the lice off the clouds. To complete this game, you have to defeat the lice and get to the red safe zone which is the ending for the level.
I took influence from the game Mario for its style and colours as it stands out to children.

pop art demo

Today we made a pop art image using an everyday object. Firstly we went to image, mode and chose Grayscale. Then adjust the brightness and contrast to darken it a bit more. Next we used monotone and duotone to give the shoe colours. We then used the Pen tool for precise selections to make a selection on the shoe. We then adjusted the hue and saturation of the shoe. Then we got a New layer, chose a background colour and filled the layer using paint bucket. Then we Transformed the first image so we could then Duplicate the image and adjust the hue and saturations.

I feel that this technique is an easy technique and a fast way to create something different. I like this technique and I will use this in the future.

3 line drawing examples

DC Batman comics

Batman comic pages are very iconic and is known by everyone. The lines show movement as the main character is fighting off the enemies, also the water and the logs are given movement as their is a lot going on. The viewer can understand the nature of the comic page because of line. They can understand batman is kicking someone or running because of the lines showing movement. The lines also show effects, it shows a bright explosion like image to show the impact, which helps the viewer understand what is going on. If no movement lines where shown or explosions and impacts weren't there. The comic page would look very motionless and wouldn't give the same effect to the reader.

Santa Cruz skateboards
The Santa Cruz skateboard graphics are very crazy and mad, which portrays the image of the skating scene. The viewer of their art attack video can understand the the character is a skater, he has hit his head and is having some dream which involves the character progressively getting more and more scared as the video goes on. You can tell this by the facial expression get more detailed as the fear grows. The media used helps get the story across better, compared to a comic book style because the media used is modern and I feel it helps the viewer understand the meaning behind the skate culture as well as the company.

The Screaming hand has become an iconic image for the Santa Cruz company and for skating as a whole. The viewer can instantly understand this piece as it is weird and mad. Meaning they will be able to relate it to the skating scene for its freestyle feeling and crazy originalities. The colours and the lines express the skate culture because of the bright colours. This would have been created as a screen print in 3 main separate layers. The first layer would be the blue hand, then the black shading to give shape the hand and then the tongue. This piece has been created on skateboards, snowboards, top, shoes and many other materials. This has become an iconic image for the skate scene.

Iron Maiden
Eddie the head

Iron Maiden are a classic rock band which are very loud and a bit mad. Their cd cover help explain their style of madness. nearly all of their cd covers feature Eddie and it shows dark, scary, madness which helps the veiwer uderstand what kind of a band they are and their look. The font that their name is in is very solid and stand out to veiwer. Although their name is very straight, their cd artwork is very free and slighty abstract. Their artwork is very similar to Santa Cruz's graphics in that they also have very mad designs. The colours used are very dark which makes the veiwer understand what kind of a band they are.

Observational drawings

Firstly, I drew 3 keyring using a graphics tablet. These came out better than expected because I didn't feel comfortable using the graphics tablet.

I then applied colour to one of my keyring drawings.

I also drew them in my sketchbook to show different methods in my work.
I experimented with the cross hatching technique in Photoshop with my drawn images which I scanned into the computer.
I tried another shading technique in Photoshop, but I tried tonal shading to see the difference between the two techniques and i feel that the cross hatching technique is more successful.

Secondly, I attempted to draw an iPhone which didn't work well because of the shape and proportions. I then reviewed my first attempted and improved it. It looks a lot better but it could still be improved further.

Research

Cubism

Cubism is objects that are broken up and assembled in abstract form to create an image which has a multitude of point of views. Cubism is a form of abstract art and is very hard to understand as it broken up to make an image which is not recognisable, but there are image which use cubism style whilst the image I more recognisable than others. Majority of the cubism pieces use very bright colours whilst some of Picasso’s pieces use dark colours.

Pablo Picasso

Picasso is a Spanish painter who is one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and is widely famous for his cubist paintings.

Picasso Portrait of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler 1910

This piece is a prime example of how cubism really breaks up an image of a face and assembles it as a non-recognisable image. There are a lot of shapes and lines which are bundled together make a face but if it wasn’t known as a face, I feel that the viewer would see it as a face. Although this is a very complex piece, you can see what looks like the nose and the eyes and hands at the bottom of the piece. This is a bizarre way the display a portrait because of the shapes and lines. Also the colours are very dark and don’t have the realistic shades for skin. The colours a complex as the colours are very different and to recreate the colours, it would be hard to do, compared to simple flat colours. This piece is unlike other cubism pieces because of the dark colours used. I like this piece because it is full of shapes and chaos and makes great use of space in the piece to create confusion in the piece.

Invader is a French urban artist who creates art work in his own art movement, rubikcubism. He has taken influence from the art movement cubism and updates artistic techniques made famous by Picasso and has made it modern by using Rubik cubes; he also creates pieces using mosaics and makes pieces of invaders from the classic pixel game, which he creates piece around streets.

Pop art

Pop art is a movement which is popular culture and some of the work looks like comic books. Which is relevant to the time because when pop art was around, comic book were a big thing which would have influenced the work.

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol is one on the most famous artists in the world and is mostly known for his work in pop art.

The tomato soup piece has become iconic in pop art. It is instantly related to pop art. Its lines and colours are simple and not over complex which makes it easier on the eye for the veiwer and it is lines and colours are very much like the comic books at the time. Its a very simple piece but incredibly recognisable which makes the pop art movement famous.

Paul McCue

Paul McCue has taken influence from Andy Warhole and has created pieces which use Darth Vader and other star wars characters. His creations are a mix of pop art with its layout and colours and steampunk as it looks like metalalic.
