The fierce black hounds roam freely on the moor. They are
savage and evil, and known as the Hounds of Hell or the Whist Hounds. Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle is said to have been inspired by the legend of the evil
Squire Richard Cabell.
The squire is said to have sold his soul to the Devil. After
he died on July 5, 1677, a phantom pack of black hunting dogs with glowing red
eyes is said to have raced across Dartmoor on the night of his burial,
breathing fire and howling at his tomb. According to local legend, the demonic
hounds have roamed the moor ever since and can often be seen around the
anniversary of his death prowling around the grave trying to get the promised
soul for the Devil.

Clapper bridges are unique to the Dartmoor area. There are 30 or so
bridges on Dartmoor constructed in the 13 th and 14 th centuries by medieval
tin workers and farmers as crossings over the many small rivers that traverse
the moorland. The best example is at Postbridge, four enormous 8 ton slabs,
each 15 feet long, span the East Dart River.
